Is my house too small or too untidy?
Please be reassured, the answer to this is no, please don’t worry!
I live and work in St. Albans where houses tend to be small, often quite dark and historic too. Houses are places to live, they’re very rarely show-homes, they are filled with our stuff, especially when a baby or young children come along. I’m a mamma to three young children, I often wish my house was tidy and minimal but it’s just not possible! I’m an expert in finding a few small spots with good natural light and that really is all we need. Many photography studios are quite small spaces too, it’s all about finding the best light location. If you are blessed with lots of space that’s wonderful, we can photograph as much of your home as you would like.
I think you will be surprised at how beautiful we can make a few small spots in your home look and newborn photography is about getting close and cuddly with your new little love. It is not usually about wide landscape shots (unless of course that is what you would like!).
Photographing in your own home tells your story, it is completely authentic to you and a little memoir of your history, even if you move house, this is the place you spent these early newborn days and nights. It becomes a sacred place – all the mess, darkness and non-stylised furnishing are fine! I will move things around or out of frame and move them back for you.
Newborn photography in your own home takes the pressure off you to travel when you may be feeling achy or overwhelmed, all you need to do is hand over baby to a partner while you get dressed, make yourself a cup of tea and let me do the rest. If you’re still figuring out breastfeeding and your most comfortable chair or pillow are making all the difference (I found breastfeeding my first son very challenging and preferred the comfort and privacy of my own home), then you have access to these at home.
What should I wear?
Almost two years after my third baby was born, I’m nowhere near fitting into my clothes that I wore before pregnancy, and I’m okay with that. Some people are back in their pre-pregnancy clothes within a few weeks, most aren’t, some never go back, and that’s all okay. I understand and empathise with all the feelings! With this is mind, my number one piece of advice is – wear what makes you feel comfortable and happy. Try a few things on, find something you like, if you still don’t like how you look, let me know and I’ll think about the angles. Mamma, your body is amazing and you are amazing!
I will send you images of ideas on WhatsApp on outfit choices of the mamma’s I’ve been blessed to photograph at home with their newborns and you can take some inspiration if you would like!
